Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, will reopen to commercial flights on Saturday morning to help get tourists off the island.

The Airports Authority of Jamaica has confirmed that passenger flights will begin at 7:00 a.m.

Sangster, which is Jamaica's main gateway for tourists, took a hard hit during the passage of Hurricane Melissa on Tuesday. Parts of the facility were damaged as the powerful storm brushed close to the north coast.

Minister Vaz said the airport suffered "more damage than usual" because it was so close to Melissa's path.

Since Thursday, the airport has been used mainly for relief operations, but normal commercial flights are set to resume on Saturday, November 1.
