Virgo family launches GoFundMe account to aid legal fight
Dale and Sherine Virgo, whose daughter was barred from entering the Kensington Primary School in St Catherine because she has dreadlocks, have launched a GoFundMe account, seeking US$140,000 (approximately J$20.4 million) to assist in the fight against hair discrimination.
On the GoFundMe page, the Virgos explained that the family's fight for their daughter's self expression of wearing dreadlocks has been emotionally, financially and mentally challenging.
Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the child's constitutional rights were not breached when the school refused her access because of her dreadlocks two years ago.
A written judgement is yet to be given and the Virgos stated that while the family hopes for the best in the appeal court, they are prepared to take the matter to the Privy Council in the United Kingdom.
"We forsee further legal fees that will be strenuous on our ability to keep the claim alive in our fight against social injustice, not only for our daughter but the many other black children faced with this injustice," a part of the GoFundMe story read.
